There is something irresistible about a genie lamp in gold – a tiny object built around the idea that something wonderful might be waiting inside.

This vintage 9ct gold charm is by British jeweller Fred Manshaw, a name collectors of wonderfully characterful vintage gold charms will recognise. Manshaw became known for beautifully made novelty pieces with personality, often with clever moving details and a sense of humour. His work has become increasingly collectable, particularly when his maker’s mark and British hallmarks remain clearly visible, as they are here.

And this one has presence. Fully three-dimensional and beautifully sculptural, the lamp has a generous, rounded body, raised lid and wonderfully exaggerated spout. It feels substantial rather than tiny or flat – exactly what you want from a charm like this.

Genie lamps have symbolised wishes, possibility, luck and the tantalising idea that something magical could happen. Add Fred Manshaw, vintage British gold and fabulous scale, and this becomes so much more than a charm.

Some wishes really should come in gold.
